Our Uniforms

In Ship 25, we take pride in our associations with the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Coast Guard and Sea Scouts. Ship 25 youth and adult members are especially proud to wear our dark navy blue uniforms because they are modern and express connection to each other and our organizations.

The Sea Scout uniform consists of a dark navy short-sleeve shirt, matching long pants, matching tee shirt (customized with your name), black nylon Coast Guard rigger’s belt and our customized Ship 25 hat. Most of our members also purchase optional dark navy shorts for warm weather activities.

Our uniforms are intentionally darker in color than the ones worn by the Coast Guard Forces – which are a brighter-blue color. As we walk around our City and engage in training and service projects, we are responsible to reflect the finest image of Sea Scouting and the Coast Guard Forces.

You are responsible to purchase the following uniform items as soon as you have paid your registration fees and have received formal written acceptance as a member. All items are acquired from our on line source. Do not purchase your uniform items from Wal Mart or similar places, as shirts sold there are a slightly different blue color and do not come with Sea Scout patches already sewn-on.

Required Clothing

First, access SG Trading Post: Home – www.seascouts.sgtradingpost.online

Every Sea Scout should acquire the dark navy “Dickies” shirt with the Sea Scout patches already sewn-on and a navy Sea Scout logo tee shirt customized with your last name and Ship number.

Men and Women acquire the same items from SG Trading Post:

  • Dickies Ripstop Wicking Shirt ( SY60 – EMB – Ripstop Wicking Shirt ). These shirts are the same fit for men and women. For females, we do not advise purchasing a woman’s Dickies shirt product, because the sleeves and pockets are too small for the patches.
  • Wicking T-Shirt (#ST350 – EMB).
    • Select the “navy” color (they do not sell dark navy tee shirts).
    • In the “Please select your garment logo” window, select “Option A Sea Scouts Logo (BSAE050)”.
    • At the question “Would you like to personalize your logo?”, select “Yes”.
    • In the “If yes, please type in your Ship …” window, type “SEA SCOUT SHIP 25” using all capital letters.
    • At the question “Would you like your name/positioned embroidered …”, select “Yes”.
    • In the “If yes, enter your name/position here …”, type only your last name using all capital letters.

Men acquire pants (and optional shorts if they wish) from the “5.11” company:

  • You do not have to purchase the optional shorts. You can buy any other dark color shorts you wish. Dark blue is best.

Shoes

You do not need to purchase fancy or expensive shoes to go with your uniform.  You probably already have shoes that will work well with all Ship 25 activities.  Generally, you need to wear shoes to go along with the tasks we will be doing.

  • If we are having a Ship business meeting, any shoes work well.
  • If we are going to be training in an active environment (and especially if we will be going on boats or ships), you will want a pair of soft-soled athletic shoes of any color and socks that work well with them.  Make sure to have shoes that lace-up securely.  “Slip-on” shoes will easily slip-off, and are therefore dangerous.
  • A great (but not required) kind of shoe when we are on boats are the type that have a flat bottom with tiny ridges, rather than athletic shoes that have large “gripping” treads for running on land.  These shoes are generically referred to as “boat shoes” and are expensive if you purchase them at a high-end store at full price.  The Ship 25 Committee found that there are great versions on amazon.com for under $20.  Make sure you get lace-up shoes and not “slip-on” shoes.

Ship-Provided Accessories

When you have paid your Ship dues and are sworn-in as a member of Ship 25, you will receive a number of items to complete your uniform.  There is no additional fee for these items.

  • A customized Ship 25 Sea Scout Hat.  Our customized hats say “Sea Scout Ship 25” and “District of Columbia”.
  • A black nylon Coast Guard belt called a “rigger’s belt”.  This is a secure type of belt to which you can attach small tools or equipment.  A fellow Sea Scout can steady you from slipping or even falling overboard by holding on to your rigger’s belt.
  • A “council shoulder patch” for the upper left sleeve of your uniform shirt.  This patch is sewn close to the shoulder seam.
  • A “Ship number patch” for your left sleeve.  This patch is customized to Ship 25 and is sewn directly under and touching the “council shoulder patch”.
  • A “unit patch” for your right sleeve.  The colorful “unit patch” is specially designed to express Ship 25’s role in the District of Columbia and its affiliation with the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Your “unit patch” is sewn one inch under the US flag patch that comes already sewn-on.
  • The patches are sewn onto your new uniform shirt and you can follow the diagram here:   https://seascout.org/download/guide-to-insignia/?wpdmdl=22336  If you are not handy with sewing, we encourage you to take your patches and uniform to a local tailor to sew them on.  You want your uniform to look sharp, and there is nothing more detracting than crooked or poorly-affixed patches. Do not use glue.
  • A tailor who knows how to sew the patches in the right places (and also tailor your uniform to fit more-precisely) is Connie at Westchester Valet, 4000 Cathedral Ave., NW, Washington, DC  20016.  Phone:  202-965-4066.  The office is accessed via the loading dock in the rear of the building.
  • Members of Sea Scout Ship 25 do not wear “neckerchiefs” (neck scarfs worn by some other Sea Scout Ships).

Optional Clothing

For hot weather, you may want a pair of shorts.  If you do, obtain a pair of shorts you like that are dark navy in color, so they will match your required clothing items.

Purchasing Assistance

A family that needs assistance with the purchase of required uniform clothing for their Sea Scout should contact the adult Chair of the Ship 25 Committee to discuss how help can be provided.  Send a note to the Ship 25 Committee Chair here:  SeaScoutsDc+CommitteeChair@gmail.com
